Mrs. Olga Helena “Cricket” Carter, née Skorapa, died at Duke Hospital on June 28th, 2015 in Durham, North Carolina at the age of 88.
Mrs. Carter is survived by her brother, Dr. Victor Skorapa, Jr., her nieces, Elizabeth McAlister of Decatur, Georgia, Olga Skorapa, Ph.D. of Lynn, Massachusetts, and her nephew Victor Skorapa, III, of Freeport, Maine, and their six adult children. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, George H. Carter of Durham, North Carolina, in 2011.
Cricket was born on April 29th, 1927 in Richmond, Virginia, to Victor Anthony Skorapa and Bozena Starek Skorapa. She graduated from John Marshall High School of Richmond, Virginia in 1945 and attended the University of Richmond. Married to George H. Carter, future founder and president of Durham Ready Mixed Concrete Supply Co., Mrs. Carter began working for Durham City Government where she worked for her entire career. Cricket was known for her devotion to her husband whom she called “Bootie,” and her love of animals both wild and domestic. She was elegant, witty, and vivacious and a fabulous cook and a stylish dresser. Olga cared for her mother in her home for 20 years following her father's death. Her life was full of love and service.
A funeral for Mrs. Carter is scheduled for August 1 at 11a.m. at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship 4907 Garrett Road, Durham, NC, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Cricket's life. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Animal Protection Society of Durham, 2117 E. Club Blvd, Durham, NC 27704.
