Jean Bradley Brooks, 87, passed away peacefully at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, early on Saturday, July 25, 2015.
Born Martha Jeanette “Jean” Bradley to parents Raymond R. Bradley and Aleph Benton Jones Bradley, Jean grew up in Whitakers, NC. She attended Greensboro College, graduating in 1949 with a major in English and a minor in Religious Education. Jean married Robert “Bob” Brooks on June 25, 1949 and enjoyed 59 years of marriage and raising their family in Elizabeth City. Jean and Bob were devoted members of First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City where she served on the Altar Guild for many years and was an active volunteer. During her life in Elizabeth City, Jean was also a member of the Albemarle Hospital Auxiliary and had an active life as an avid Bridge player and member of Pine Lakes Country Club. She and Bob were long time supporters of The College of the Albemarle and Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle. She moved from her beloved Elizabeth City in 2012 to Tarboro, NC to be closer to her family. Her most important life pursuit was being a devoted wife and wonderful mother to her three children.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents, and her brother Raymond R. Bradley, Jr. She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Smith and husband Barry of Steamboat Springs, CO and Martha Richardson and husband Bill of Raleigh, NC; one son, Brad Brooks and wife Margaret of Greenville, NC; one sister, Frances Woodard of Tarboro, NC and one brother, Marvin Bradley and wife Eva of Whitakers, NC. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Brooke Rygg Schjellerud and husband Tor Erik of Gjovik, Norway, Marty Smith, Leigh Ann Smith and Charlie Smith of Steamboat Springs, CO, Liz Richardson of Washington, DC, Bo Richardson and wife Creecy of Manteo, NC, Rob Brooks and Abbe Brooks of Philadelphia, PA; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Henrik Schjellerud and Winston and William Richardson.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Pastor Joe Casteel. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First United Methodist Church, 201 S.
