Mary “Marie” Godfrey Bowers, 88, went home to be with her Lord July 26, 2015 in Piedmont Crossing Retirement Center.
Mrs. Bowers was born June 12, 1927 to Joseph Edgar and Mary Jane Bean Godfrey in Lexington. She graduated from Thomasville High School in 1944 and attended Ashemore Business College. She married Aubrey Lee Bowers January 7, 1949. She was the former President of the Pilot Club, a member of Secretary’s/Officer Association, for which she was secretary of the year in 1967. Mrs. Bowers was also on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army and a life long member of First Baptist Church in Thomasville. She retired, after 38 years of service as a Financial Secretary, from Rich Fork Baptist Church. She also worked as a secretary for Wrenn Hosiery; she worked in the cafeteria for Thomasville City Schools and taught Sunday School for First Baptist Church. Mrs. Bowers was a member of several groups at First Baptist Church including the Blanche Godfrey Circle, the Couples Sunday School Class and various committees. She was also a member of Greenwood Baptist Bible Study led by Jennie Counts. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Thelma Godfrey Cranford and Inez Godfrey Motley; one brother, Odis Clifford Godfrey; and one great-granddaughter, Lexi Bowers.
Mrs. Bowers leaves behind her loving husband of 67 years, Aubrey Lee Bowers; two sons, Roger Bowers (Jan) of Gibsonville, NC and Jeff Bowers (Angie) of Danville VA; one daughter, Linda Bowers Voyles of Strongsville, OH; eight grandchildren, Lee Bowers (Tamera) of Haw River, NC, Jason Voyles of Strongsville, OH, Ben Bowers (Mindy) of Upper Arlington, OH, Jono Bowers (Mary) of Burlington, NC, Chris Bowers (Danielle) of Greensboro, NC, Bryan Voyles of Strongsville, OH, Stephanie Voyles Stamper (Jim) of Athens, OH, and Stephen Bowers of Greensboro, NC; seven Great-grandchildren, Cody Bowers, Taylor Bowers, Bailey Bowers, Carson Stamper, Josie Bowers, Brinley Bowers, and Aisley Bowers; and ten nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 11 AM in First Baptist Church in Thomasville with the Rev. Bynum Orr officiating. Internment will follow at Calvary United Church of Christ Cemetery in Thomasville. The family will greet friends Friday, from 6-8 PM at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville.
