Jenifer Wake Warthen, beloved mother and grandmother, died on July 21, at the age of 96. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Elizabeth Devereaux, her son Wake Lee Warthen, three grandchildren, Wake L. Warthen II, Christina Lee Warthen and Elizabeth Warthen Svatek and two great grandchildren, Landon Svatek and Caroline Svatek.
Born in Cardiff Wales, UK on February 10, 1919, she served in the Cardiff Fire Department during the bombing of the Cardiff dock yards in World War II. She married George Lee Warthen, a Captain in the US Army in 1946 in Cardiff and arrived in the United States on the Queen Mary as a war bride. Settling in Raleigh, she became a US Citizen in 1956.
She attended the Church of the Good Shepherd for many years, then Mount Olivet Baptist and lastly All Saints Anglican Church. Her final resting place will be in the family grave yard in Warthen, Georgia.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 8, at 10am at All Saints Anglican Church, 908 Deboy St., on corner at Western Blvd in Raleigh, followed by a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the All Saints Anglican Church.
