John Donald Cernel, 78, of Apex, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015, at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, North Carolina.
John was born April 19, 1937, in Berwyn, Illinois, to the late John J. Cernel and Agnes K. Cebrat Cernel. He graduated from La Porte High School in La Porte, Indiana, in 1956. He went on to graduate from Tri-State College in Indiana with a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He worked many jobs in the plastics industry, including Plastic Masters in New Buffalo, Michigan; Ethyl Corporation in Richmond, Virginia; Oneida Molded Plastics in Oneida, New York; and OMP in Forest City, North Carolina. After retirement, he was very active, always working on the house, taking care of the yard, and riding roller coasters at the amusement park. We loved him very much and will miss him dearly.
John is survived by his daughters, Shelley Erin Cernel (m. Andreas Schmidt), Wendy Nicole Cernel (w/ Eyob Eyualem), and Megan Lorraine Washington (m. Andrew Washington). He is also survived by children John Cernel (m. Adelita Cernel), Julie Cernel, and Jeff Cernel (m. Melanis Cernel); sister Carolyn Gazdick (m. Jim Gazdick); and many grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
The family will receive friends 1-2 pm Tuesday, September 1, 2015, followed by a 2 pm prayer service at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams Street, Apex, NC 27502.
