William Fred "Dr. Mac" McClure, 81, of Raleigh, died peacefully in his sleep on August 28, 2015. He was married to his loving wife, Judy for sixty years.
Dr. Mac was a graduate of Clemson University, where he proudly served as "Senior Platoon Leader" in the ROTC. He was commissioned from the ROTC to the US Army Reserves in 1955. After being inactive for some time, he was called to action on October 11, 1961. He was honorably discharged in 1972, after 17 total years of duty, having served during war time in Korea. Dr. Mac went on to study at South Eastern Theological Ministry, and served as pastor of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Sims, NC. He completed his post graduate work at NC State, receiving both his Masters and Doctorate. He became part of the faculty of Biological and Agricultural Engineering as a professor for 42 years. Post retirement, Dr. Mac became world renowned in the field of Near Infrared Spectroscopy, doing research and lecturing all around the world, including Japan, New Zealand, China, Amsterdam and Poland to name a few.
Dr. Mac was a devoted member of Forest Hills Baptist Church for 45 years, active as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and in the men's Monday night bible study. In his spare time, he enjoyed being an Amateur Extra License in amateur radio for many years. He loved technology, and always kept up with the cutting edge with the newest computers, electronics and smart phones. He enjoyed watching Westerns, and most recently enjoyed ending each day by listening to his favorite shows on Christian radio. A favorite time of his was going to McDonald's for coffee once a week with his colleagues, Dr. Charles Suggs, Dr. Tim Sebock and son-in-law, Kenny. Dr. Mac was a loving family man, a caring grandfather, and was the happiest when he had his whole family together.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Judy Holdman McClure; children, Leigh Ann McClure Latchum (Kenneth) of Raleigh, Kathy McClure Hancock (Larry) of Raleigh, and William Fred McClure, Jr. (Angie) of Smithfield; grandchildren, Jayna Blue (Willie) of Fuquay-Varina, Amber Johnson (Matthew) of Greenville, NC, Will Speight (Rachel) San Diego, CA, and Silas McClure of Smithfield; one great granddaughter, Carter Rose Speight; a special great niece, Mary-Michael McClure; and a beloved dog, Murphy. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and one brother.
A visitation will be held Monday, August 31, from 6:00-8:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2:00 pm, at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC. Interment following the service will be private.
