The Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce has named Adrienne Cole to succeed Ken Atkins as Wake County’s top economic development official.

Cole has most recently been business economic development director for Lend Lease, a development and construction firm.

She worked for seven years on the Chamber’s economic development staff, from 2004 to 2011. She also worked as the economic development director and county planner for Pamlico County and was executive director of the Carteret County Economic Development Council.

Atkins, who turns 65 in February, has been executive director of Wake County Economic Development since 1997. He's retiring at the end of December from the program, which is run by the Chamber and receives funding from both Wake County and the City of Raleigh.

Cole will also serve as a senior vice president of economic development at the Chamber, a title Atkins also held.

While at the Chamber, Cole was involved in the recruitment of MeadWestVaco, Headway Corporate Resources and PRA International, as well as the succesful effort to retain Red Hat.
