Lenovo continues to rapidly gain ground in the worldwide tablet market, according to research firm IDC.
The world’s largest PC maker shipped 2.3 million tablet devices globally in the third quarter, up from 1.5 million in the second quarter and a scant 400,000 units in the year-ago quarter, IDC reported last week.
The 420.7 percent year-over-year growth in the third quarter made Lenovo the No. 4 tablet maker — behind Apple, Samsung and Asus. Lenovo also ranked No. 4 in the previous quarter, which was the first time it cracked the top five.
Lenovo’s latest growth far out-paced its top competitors. The second-fastest rate of growth among the major producers was No. 5 Acer, which enoyed 346.3 percent year-over-year growth.
Lenovo’s 4.8 percent market share makes it a distant fourth, however. Apple ranks first at 29.6 percent, followed by Samsung at 20.4 percent and Asus at 7.4 percent.
Lenovo is based in China but has a headquarters in Morrisville with 2,200 workers.
