LED lighting company Cree is investing $400,000 to build a small, open-air testing facility at its headquarters campus in Durham.

The facility, which will have a roof but no walls, will be used to test the company’s outdoor lighting fixtures, said Cree spokeswoman Lauren Taber.

“We have the same kind of testing for indoor products,” Taber said. “The outdoor products are larger so they require additional space.”

Work already has begun on the facility and should be completed by the end of this month.

The new testing facility isn’t expected to create any additional jobs. Cree, which has 18 buildings at its Durham campus, has more than 2,400 workers in the Triangle and more than 6,500 worldwide.
