A massive data breach that compromised the personal information of nearly 80 million people will affect 775,606 health insurance users in North Carolina, according to Anthem, the insurer targeted in the cyber attack.
Anthem, the world's second-largest insurer, said Tuesday it will mail all affected customers an offer for free 2-year credit protection, including identity theft insurance.
The hacking incident accessed a decade of private customer information from Anthem accounts, and many customers were covered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield as well as other carriers.
According to Anthem, the personal data stolen included member names, ID numbers, birthdays, Social Security numbers, address and employment information.

Those affected by the data breach in this state are 601,347 members of Anthem plans, 110,434 members of non-Anthem plans and 63,825 members of unknown plans dating back to 2004, according to the N.C. Department of Insurance.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina said that 180,204 of its former and current customers were affected by the breach, including 69,266 who currently live in the state and 77,143 who are current BCBSNC customers.
Blue Cross customers were targeted if they used health care services out of state or outside their service area. Those claims would have been processed by Anthem on behalf of Blue Cross, said Blue Cross spokesman Lew Borman.
