The Food Lion grocery store chain is renovating about 160 stores in the Triangle and throughout central North Carolina as part of a company-wide makeover.
The Salisbury-based chain said Friday the announced upgrades will be the company’s third large-scale renovation in the state, following upgrades to 76 stores in the Wilmington and Greenville areas last year.
The company isn’t disclosing the total cost of the project, but the stores will be modernized with new products and sections in response to current trends, including a gluten free section.
Some stores will allow customers to shop inside a walk-in garden cooler to select fruits and vegetables. The company will also add prepared hot meals and daily meal deals.
The stores will remain open during renovation, with heavy construction work done overnight.
In addition to the Triangle, Food Lion stores will be renovated as far north as Roanoke Rapids and a few stores in Southern Virginia and south to Fayetteville and surrounding towns. The renovation area extends west to Siler City and east to the Rocky Mount area.
