Engineering design firm Kimley-Horn jumped 18 spots to No. 7 on Fortune’s latest list of the 100 best companies to work for in the U.S.
Kimley-Horn, which is based in Cary but is shifting its headquarters to downtown Raleigh later this month, ranked just ahead of Cary-based business software firm SAS, which fell from No. 4 last year to No. 8 on this year’s list. SAS has made Fortune’s annual list of the top 100 U.S. workplaces every year since the ranking debuted in 1998.
Kimley-Horn and SAS were the only North Carolina-based companies to make this year’s list.
“We owe this notable recognition to our employees,” Kimley-Horn president and CEO John Atz said in a prepared statement. “They make Kimley-Horn a great place to work, and this award—based on employee-feedback—reflects that.”
Kimley-Horn has 2,500 employees, including 190 that will work out of its downtown Raleigh headquarters.
Fortune noted that Kimley-Horn “goes to great lengths to thank employees” and also compensates them well.
“Combined profit sharing and 401K match was over 17 percent of salaries last year,” Fortune wrote. “The firm’s retirement compensation was four times more than larger-sized firms in their industry.”
The Fortune list of the best workplaces is based on a survey of employees as well as select criteria such as pay and benefit programs, hiring practices and diversity efforts.
