Shop Talk reporter Virginia Bridges asked small-business owners how they determine which charities their business will support. This is what they said.
▪ ““For us, we like it to be animal related,” said Frank Papa, owner of the regional pet stores Phydeaux. “We prefer for them to be local, and we want them to line up with our mission.”
▪ “We focus our charitable support on local organizations with whom we have a personal connection,” said Bruce Foster, owner of Mr. Handyman of Western Wake County. “The Caring Community Foundation, the Garner Community Center and our church are examples of organizations that provide services which benefit people in a personal and tangible way. Depending on the situation, we provide financial support and/or donations of skilled labor and material when needed.”
▪ “We support charities that support the hearing impaired, i.e., the same customers we target,” said Robert Keefer, owner and CEO of Now Hear This, a private audiology clinic in Raleigh.

▪ “We do our best to respond and support each organization and charity that contacts us for help,” said Stacey Chapman, general manager of The Print Shop in Chapel Hill. “As a small, local retail art print and picture framing store, it is best for us to donate merchandise of our choosing to be used in silent auctions or raffles, which allows us to control the cost and to use what might be available for donating at that particular time. Most organizations will display our store name, fliers or coupons at the auction or on their website in exchange for our supporting donation. Win-Win!”
