PITTSBORO - A Staley man who was shot by a Chatham County sheriff's deputy during a drug raid this month has been charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and other felonies.

Jose Gomez Miranda, 34, of 75 Irene Lane, Staley, is being held in prison in lieu of an $800,000 secured bond, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's office.

Miranda was charged April 18 after being released from UNC Hospitals. He was taken there April 13 after he was shot while the sheriff's Special Incident Response Team and Narcotics Unit was searching a mobile home in Staley.

Police said an unidentified deputy fired several shots when the officers encountered a man, later identified as Miranda, with a handgun.

Deputies seized several kilograms of narcotics from the home, according to the sheriff's office.

Miranda was charged with several felonies, including assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and manufacturing cocaine.

The sheriff's office has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the April 13 shooting to determine whether the deputy acted appropriately.
