PITTSBORO -- The Chatham County commissioners will consider a resolution Monday telling lawmakers how they can help the county deal with the closing of the Pilgrim's Pride poultry plant in Siler City.
During a special meeting Thursday, state Rep. Joe Hackney and state Sen. Bob Atwater asked the county to outline what help Chatham County needs at the state and federal level.
County Manager Charlie Horne said he is already working with Dianne Reid, director of the county's Economic Development Corp., on various actions related to the plant's closing.
The closing affects more than 800 jobs and 40 farms in Chatham County.
"Some of these [farms] still owe money on new facilities,' said Dan Campeau, area poultry agent for Cooperative Extension. "While we may get them some help with repayment of loans through the Farm Service Agency, it will still be very hard for any of these folks to make any profit."
