Collapsing floor injures firefighter

A firefighter was injured Thursday after the floor of a burning apartment collapsed under him.

Firefighters were called to the Royal Oaks Apartments at 3545 Mayfair St. about 6 a.m. The blaze had started in the basement and spread to the first and second floors.

Part of the first floor gave way under two firefighters, Assistant Chief Dan Curia said.

Apartment fire causes no injures

A fire broke out early Saturday morning at an apartment complex, causing smoke damage throughout the building but no injuries.

Firefighters contained the smoky blaze at 916 W. Trinity Ave. to a single first-floor apartment, said Barry Yeargan, battalion chief at the Durham Fire Department, Station 2.

Only two of the units in the building were occupied, and both occupants escaped without injury.

Apartment building fire is ruled arson

A Sunday morning fire that damaged a Chapel Hill apartment building was intentionally set, investigators with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Chapel Hill Fire Department said Wednesday.

The fire started on the top floor of the three-floor, 12-unit "S" building at the Kingswood apartments complex on the N.C. 54 Bypass. Investigators had previously said the fire was suspicious.

Two top units were destroyed, and the remaining units sustained varying degrees of smoke and water damage, according to the Fire Department.

Fire puts apartment tenants out of homes in Durham

Fire destroyed a building at the Royal Oaks Apartments in South Durham, leaving tenants in 19 units homeless Wednesday evening.

No one was injured in the blaze, said Edward Reid, assistant fire marshal for the Durham Fire Department. Although 19 of the 20 units in building 3521 had tenants, it was not clear Wednesday how many people were at home when the fire erupted about 5:10 p.m.

Officials had not determined what caused the fire or where it started, Reid said. Firefighters, who were interviewing residents Wednesday, will not know the cause of the blaze until today when their investigation is complete, Reid said.

Residents escape apartment fire

Four firefighters survived a ceiling collapse, and no one was seriously injured in a fire that spread through a 12-unit building at North Raleigh apartment complex Saturday evening.

Raleigh Fire Department Division Chief James Poole said the fire reached 10 of the Governor's Point apartments, and the others suffered smoke and water damage. All the residents escaped, and firefighters rescued a couple of pets, Poole said.

Poole did not know how the fire started but said a resident saw embers falling in her second-floor apartment and began knocking on doors to alert the other occupants.
