A firefighter was injured after the floor collapsed from under him while fighting a fire this morning.
Firefighters were called to the Royal Oaks Apartments at 3545 Mayfair Street at about 6 a.m. The blaze had started on the first floor and spread to the basement and the second floor.
Part of the first floor gave way as two firefighters were fighting the fire, said Assistant Chief Dan Curia. That firefighter, whose name was not immediately available, suffered a knee injury. He was not hospitalized.
Investigators are determining the cause of the blaze, which displaced 14 adults and six children in 10 apartments.
There have been five other fires at the apartment complex since 2004, including two in the same building as this morning's fire - a kitchen fire in 2008 and a bathroom fire in 2005. Firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire at 3015 Weymouth Street in 2004, a fire that burned two floors at 3523 Mayfair St. in 2005 and an arson at 3554 Mayfair St. in October.
Fire officials plan to look for any common denominators between the fires and talk with the complex's management, Curia said. If requested, firefighters will talk to residents about fire safety.
"We'll be as proactive as we can," Curria said.
