Firefighter injured in Durham apartment fire

A firefighter was injured after the floor collapsed from under him while fighting a fire this morning.

Firefighters were called to the Royal Oaks Apartments at 3545 Mayfair Street at about 6 a.m. The blaze had started on the first floor and spread to the basement and the second floor.

Part of the first floor gave way as two firefighters were fighting the fire, said Assistant Chief Dan Curia. That firefighter, whose name was not immediately available, suffered a knee injury. He was not hospitalized.

No one injured in downtown Raleigh fire

Firefighters put out a fire this morning at a senior citizens residence near downtown Raleigh, the city's fire marshal reported.

The entire eighth-floor of the Carriage House, a residence for elderly operated by the Raleigh Housing Authority, was evacuated as a result of the fire, said Raleigh Fire Marshal Rusty Styons.

No injuries were reported.

Residents escape apartment fire

Four firefighters survived a ceiling collapse, and no one was seriously injured in a fire that spread through a 12-unit building at North Raleigh apartment complex Saturday evening.

Raleigh Fire Department Division Chief James Poole said the fire reached 10 of the Governor's Point apartments, and the others suffered smoke and water damage. All the residents escaped, and firefighters rescued a couple of pets, Poole said.

Poole did not know how the fire started but said a resident saw embers falling in her second-floor apartment and began knocking on doors to alert the other occupants.

Cigarette caused fire at complex

Morrisville Fire Chief Todd Wright said a discarded cigarette tossed onto a third-floor balcony at an apartment complex off N.C. 54 ignited an early-morning fire Tuesday and displaced more than two dozen people.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters saved a cat from one of the third-floor apartments. "It was real wet when I saw it, and real scared," Wright said.

About 45 firefighters from five fire departments rushed to the Camden Westwood apartment complex at 2111 Summit Ridge Loop just before 2 a.m., Wright said.

Apartment building fire is ruled arson

A Sunday morning fire that damaged a Chapel Hill apartment building was intentionally set, investigators with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Chapel Hill Fire Department said Wednesday.

The fire started on the top floor of the three-floor, 12-unit "S" building at the Kingswood apartments complex on the N.C. 54 Bypass. Investigators had previously said the fire was suspicious.

Two top units were destroyed, and the remaining units sustained varying degrees of smoke and water damage, according to the Fire Department.
