Orange school board seats newcomers

Four hands rested on two Bibles on Thursday afternoon as the majority of the new Orange County Board of Education was sworn in.

Susan Hallman, Anne Medenblik, Debbie Piscitelli and Ted Triebel -- all political newcomers -- won in the May nonpartisan election. They are all parents who have volunteered in the district's schools.

After they were sworn in, the newcomers to the seven-member board sat down to their first meeting. They unanimously voted for incumbent Dennis Whitling as chairman and for Triebel as vice chairman.

Police charge man with hit and run

A Durham man has been charged with felony hit and run, as well as driving while impaired, after hitting another man with his vehicle early Sunday.

Police reports say Javier S. Hernandez, 26, of 3835 Guess Road, Apt. 511, struck Jerome Taylor shortly after midnight on Holloway Street near Lynn Road, then attempted to elude arrest and refused when a Durham officer told him to get out of his vehicle.

Hernandez is also charged with resisting arrest and driving on a revoked license.

Symphony president faces DWI charge

The president of the N.C. Symphony was arrested Wednesday night when a police officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol inside his car.

David Chambless Worters, 38, of 2818 Anderson Drive, was charged with driving while impaired after a test showed he had a blood alcohol content of 0.11, according to court documents. North Carolina's legal limit is 0.08.

Worters is the president and chief executive officer of the N.C. Symphony.

Alcohol level outlined at trial

Kenneth Wayne Maready's blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit and he had traces of cocaine in his system last year when authorities say he stole a car, fled from deputies and killed a woman by crashing into her truck, a state toxicologist testified Wednesday.

Maready's blood alcohol level was .14, said Aaron Joncich, a State Bureau of Investigation agent who analyzed Maready's blood after the February 2005 crash that killed 61-year-old Kay Stokes. The legal limit is .08.

Joncich wasn't able to determine how much cocaine Maready had taken but said he had likely used the drug within a day of his blood being drawn.

Orange schools' leadership shifts

Voters replaced more than half of the Orange County Board of Education during Tuesday's election.

The race among five candidates, none of them incumbents, ended with Susan Hallman, Debbie Piscitelli, Ted Triebel and Anne Medenblik being elected.

Hallman was the top vote-getter with 23 percent, followed by Piscitelli with 20 percent, Triebel with 20 percent and Medenblik with 19 percent.
