SBI, others will review inmate death

CASTLE HAYNE -- Authorities say prosecutors and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death of a man who was being held in the New Hanover County Detention Facility.

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said 20-year-old Andrew Michael Helms of Charlotte was found dead in his cell Saturday morning.

Helms had been in jail since Feb. 8, awaiting trial on charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

The sheriff's office also said the district attorney's office was investigating.
