RALEIGH -- An N.C. State University student accused of striking and killing a bicyclist in Raleigh on Wednesday was charged today with felony death by motor vehicle.
Brian Anthony Reid, who turned 21 on the day of the accident, appeared this morning before a Wake County magistrate, who set his bail at $25,000.
Reid initially was charged with driving while impaired, failing to reduce speed and felony serious injury by vehicle.
In obtaining the new warrant this morning, a Raleigh police officer told a magistrate that in several breath alcohol tests, Reid blew from 0.09 to .13. A level of 0.08 is considered impaired.
Police said Reid was driving a pickup truck that struck Nancy Leidy, 60, as she rode her bike on Nazareth Street off Western Boulevard, near the NCSU campus. Leidy worked for free as an entomology professor at NCSU, her husband, Ross Leidy, said Wednesday night.
