Neighbors' schools

The stir over diversity and neighborhood schools in Wake County has me wondering about the religious leanings of our current school board members. A core tenet of Christianity - expressed similarly by other faiths as well - is to love your neighbor as yourself. The context of this teaching makes clear that "neighbor" is more than someone who lives nearby or is of the same race or ethnicity or socioeconomic status. I contend that we are not loving our neighbors as ourselves if we are not seeking for our neighbors' children the good we seek for our own children.

I hope that our school board and the parents whose voices they claim to represent will seek for all their neighbors the same that they want for themselves - the best schools and school placements possible. I challenge them to take into account the benefits and challenges that come with both neighborhood schools and with diversity. Their actions will soon reveal whether neighborhood schools are really about caring for neighbors or code for something

Police join Good Neighbor Initiative

The Chapel Hill Police Department Community Services Unit will greet students in the community Saturday as a part of the Good Neighbor Initiative.

The goal of the initiative is to encourage students to meet their neighbors and to work with them to make Chapel Hill neighborhoods a place of pride and safety.

Police officers and representatives from the Dean of Student Affairs Office, along with volunteers from UNC-Chapel Hill and Empowerment Inc., will walk through the Northside, Pine Knolls and Cameron-McCauley neighborhoods, delivering packets to new residents.

Community center gets its game room

Students who visit the Neighbor to Neighbor youth center after school have a new game room, thanks to the efforts of more than 100 volunteers.

The volunteers, led by a team from the Legacy Center in Morrisville, worked through the weekend to turn an unfinished garage into a hangout with pingpong, foosball, pool tables and other games.

The project, valued at more than $20,000, fulfills a wish for Neighbor to Neighbor, a faith-based organization that serves families in one of the Triangle's poorest neighborhoods.

But the owner of Health Decisions, Chapel Hill's Michael Rosenberg, would first have to sway an uncertain town council.

At a Monday public hearing, the Chapel Hill Town Council heard Rosenberg's plan to build a headquarters in the upscale Meadowmont development, a mix of homes, offices and shops.

Duke students play nice in town

Don Ball has had fewer sleepless nights since the Duke lacrosse case erupted in his Durham neighborhood.

Off-campus incidents involving Duke University students for the 2006-07 school year declined more than 75 percent from the previous year, according to a recent report by Duke's Office of Judicial Affairs.

For neighbors, the drop indicates how the lacrosse case, in part, has caused students to realize the ramifications of their behavior, said Ball, 46, who has lived in the Trinity Park neighborhood, which borders Duke's East Campus, for 16 years.
