Someone walking along a greenway shortly after noon reported seeing what appeared to be a human body in the creek near Crabtree Valley Mall, police reported. The Raleigh Fire Department's water rescue unit recovered the body.

Investigators have not said how the man died; his remains were transported to the state Medical Examiner's Office, said Jim Sughrue, a Raleigh Police spokesman. Sughrue declined to discuss how long the body may have been in the water.

He said the deceased appears to be a Hispanic male who who may be in his 20s or 30s. The man was wearing dark-colored pants that had a small "Ben Davis Gorilla Cut" logo between the belt loops and the right rear pocket. He also wore a belt buckle with a "Z" engraved into the metal and white Air Jordan sneakers with green trim.

Police, firefighters and officers with the City-County Bureau of Identification arrived about 12:20 p.m. at the section of Crabtree Creek near Lead Mine Road.

Police closed the greenway between Glenwood Avenue and Northbrook Drive and said it is expected to reopen sometime tomorrow.

Police ask anyone who might be able to assist with the identification of the dead man or who might have information on the circumstances surrounding the case to call the Raleigh Police Department's Detective Division at 890-3555.
