State and local law enforcement officers will step up patrols and checkpoints for drunken drivers during the next two weeks.
The Labor Day "Booze It & Lose It" campaign will run from Friday through Monday, Sept. 1, Gov. Mike Easley's office announced today.
During the period of Aug. 17-Sept. 3 last year, there were more than 500 alcohol-related crashes on the state's roads, resulting in 27 fatalities and 400 injuries, according to Easley's office.
State and local law enforcement officers conducted a similar anti-drunken driving campaign on Aug. 8, when they cited 454 drivers for DWI.
They also issued 808 citations for seatbelt violations and 185 citations for safety violations involving child passengers. In addition, they filed 2,047 speeding charges and 190 drug charges, apprehended 56 fugitives from justice and recovered 11 stolen vehicles.
