WILMINGTON -- A federal grand jury returned indictments this week against four people accused of bilking a bank out of $1.2 million in fraudulent student loans.
Charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud are: Derrick King, 23, of Aurora; Marvin R. Heggie, 27, of Raleigh; Melissa Renee Heggie, 29, of Grimesland; and Travis S. Hunter, 28, of Grimesland. The Heggies are brother and sister, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The 34-count indictment accuses the four of conspiring to obtain $1.2 million from JPMorgan Chase. The indictment alleges the Heggies recruited people to give them their Social Security numbers, and that the Heggies would later complete loan applications with false information.
When checks arrived the Heggies would split the money with the people whose names were on the applications, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Amounts ranged from $10,000 to $28,300.
