RALEIGH -- Raleigh firefighters were dispatched just before 3:30 p.m. today to put out a house fire in downtown's Boylan Heights neighborhood.
The house that caught on fire at 400 S. Boylan Avenue stands just a few doors down from the home of Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker. No injuries have been reported.
The older wooden home had been converted into four apartments, and the fire started in the bedroom closet of one of the first-floor apartments, said Raleigh Fire division chief H.F. Warner. The fire was extinguished quickly, Warner added, but because of the house's wooden structure, there was a lot of smoke damage.
A woman living in one of the upper-floor apartments was home at the time of the fire but got out safely, Warner said. The tenant has two pets, one of which was seen escaping from the burning house. Investigators were still trying to determine the location of the woman's other pet this afternoon, Warner said.
