RALEIGH -- Two British men were ordered released from federal custody while they await charges for illegally importing two gun silencers discovered in luggage the men flew with from London to Raleigh.
George Hope and Garry Latcham brought the silencers as a gift to a friend of Latcham’s named Peter Slivinski that lives in Roxboro, according to statements the men made to a federal immigration enforcement agent.
The men had been locked up since last Friday, but ordered released to the custody of Slivinski’s wife at a detention hearing held Friday morning. Their passports have been turned in. Silencers attach to the end of a gun and diminish the noise of shooting. Purchases of silencers carry similar levels of federal regulation as an automatic weapon.
Hope and Latcham arrived at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Nov. 13 and reported a piece of luggage as missing to American Airlines staff, according to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement affidavit.
When a Customs and Border Protection officer located the bag at RDU, two firearm silencers were found inside, the affidavit states. Federal officials arrested Hope and Latcham the next day when they returned to pick up the bag.
