RALEIGH — A Raleigh firefighter remained in critical condition at WakeMed on Thursday following an ATV accident Tuesday in Johnston County.

Andrew James Johnson, 25, of Wendell was taken to WakeMed following the wreck at 5:20 p.m. on Buffalo Road, east of Clayton. Another firefighter, Kirby Turner, 23, also of Wendell, was treated and released.

The two were on an ATV that was struck from behind by a 1999 Ford passenger car driven by Carrie Medeiros, 33, of Wendell, according to a report by Highway Patrol Trooper D.J. Hare. At the time, the ATV was stopped on Buffalo Road to make a left turn, the report said.

Medeiros was taken to Rex Hospital in Raleigh and released Wednesday.

Johnson works full-time with Raleigh Engine 11 on Glenridge Drive in North Raleigh, said Chief John McGrath. Johnson also volunteered with the fire department in Archer Lodge, McGrath said.
