RALEIGH -- A Raleigh man was killed and his wife seriously injured when their sports utility vehicle ran off Interstate 40 and struck a tree late Thursday.

Andrew Lewis Gabriel, 40, died at the scene of the accident, reported at 11:27 p.m. near the I-440 interchange in southeast Raleigh, according to a report prepared by Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Hunt.

Vielka Maria Gabriel, 38, was taken to WakeMed where she was in fair condition this morning.

The trooper's report did not indicate what caused the couple's 2004 Lincoln SUV to go off the right side of the road and into a line of woods.
