A Johnston County man was shot to death Sunday night and a second man was wounded in a confrontation at a home on Castleberry Road in the Archer Lodge community, according to the Johnston Sheriff's Office.

Richard Charlton, 35, died in the shooting at the home he shared with Kristy Brown at 2760 Castleberry Road, said Tammy Amaon, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office. Brown's former boyfriend, Michael Sistler, 40, of 1001 Wendell Road, Wendell, was taken to WakeMed, where he was in good condition today.

Deputies obtained warrants charging Sistler with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary.

Amaon said that Charlton, Brown and a third person were at the home about 9:45 p.m. when Sistler, armed with a gun, burst through the front door. She said Sistler was angry that Charlton was at the residence.

Charlton retrieved a gun, and both he and Sistler fired shots, Amaon said. Brown was not injured.

Deputies are continuing to investigate, she said, adding that she did not know who fired first.
