Newspaper carrier Jennifer Kathleen Nielsen died of a stab wound to the left side of her neck, the state Medical Examiner's Office said in a report made public today.
Nielsen, who was eight months pregnant, was found dead June 14 behind a Raleigh convenience store where she had been dropping off copies of USA Today. Police and members of her family have repeatedly asked for help from the public to find her killer.
According to the autopsy report, the stab wound penetrated 3.7 inches, injuring her carotid artery, juguluar vein and orpharynix.
Police previously confirmed that Nielsen, 22, had been stabbed.
The autopsy report did not indicate whether she had been sexually assaulted.
Police have not said whether they have recovered the knife used to kill her, though a homeless man found a bloody knife less than a block from the murder scene.
Nielsen, a mother of two small sons, was found dead behind the AmeriKing Food Mart and Exxon station at Lake Wheeler Road and Centennial Boulevard, near the State Farmers Market. Police think she was killed between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. that day, when the AmeriKing was closed.
Nielsen had moved from Utah to Fuquay-Varina with her husband and children in August.
She had been working several months delivering newspapers to earn extra money, her family said.
