Wake County school administrators presented a report to school board members Tuesday, saying they are trying to implement recommendations from an outside firm to reduce the possibility of fraud.

Summerford Accountancy PC released a report this month stating that the district is doing a good job to stop fraud but could do more. The school board hired the firm to help restore public confidence after the theft of at least $3.8 million from the transportation department.

Mark Winters, the district's chief financial officer, said the district has taken such measures as conducting more unannounced audits and hiring more internal auditors.

In other business, the board wants more nutritional requirements for drinks sold in vending machines in middle and high schools.

Following recommendations from the Wake School Health Advisory Council, the board wants administrators to negotiate a contract that requires juice drinks to contain at least 50 percent juice. They also want sport drinks to have no more than 125 calories.

The district's exclusive beverage contract with Pepsi expires in June. The board still will allow sodas to be sold in vending machines but only after the school day ends.
