DURHAM -- A captain with the Durham Fire Department sustained an eye injury Monday night when he was struck by a stream of water from a hose while fighting a house fire on West Piedmont Street.

Capt. Sean Boone, 43, was treated and released from Duke Hospital's emergency room for injuries to his left eye and bruises and swelling on his face, said Capt. Angelica Stroud. He is scheduled for further medical evaluation today, she said.

Boone has been with the fire department for 19 years.

The fire was reported at 9:52 p.m. at a boarded-up house at 210 West Piedmont St. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Stroud said firefighters spent about 30 minutes bringing the blaze under control. The dollar value of the damage was not immediately available.
