DURHAM - A man authorities were trying to arrest was struck by a police cruiser as he tried to get away from them, Durham police officials said Tuesday.

According to a news release from the Durham Police Department, officers stopped Anthony Deangelo Gooch, 21, of Wadesboro Street about 3 p.m. for a seat-belt violation at Lynn Road and N.C. 98. Gooch, who was also wanted on outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court, jumped from his car and fled on foot.

The release stated that Gooch might have stumbled while running into the street on Wedgedale Drive, falling into the path of a cruiser driven by officer D. P. Sexton. Gooch's head struck the front end.

Gooch was taken to Duke University Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. Sexton was not injured.

The case is being investigated by the police department's Traffic Services Unit, standard procedure for a traffic accident involving an officer.
