DURHAM -- No students were injured seriously after two school buses from Chewning Middle School sandwiched a Durham Public Schools service vehicle in a Tuesday afternoon accident on Red Mill Road.
The driver of the service vehicle was taken to Duke Hospital, but efforts to find out his condition were unsuccessful.
Candi Massey, 11, was riding on bus 53 when it slammed into the back of the service vehicle. That pushed the pickup truck into the rear of bus 437, causing major damage to both the front and rear of the smaller vehicle.
“The bus driver, she was looking in the mirror because somebody on the bus was standing up and stuff, and so she wasn’t paying attention to the road,” Massey said.
Students waited under a tree for more than an hour while the accident was cleaned up and new buses were dispatched to take the children home. Three were taken to the hospital for observation, Chewning Principal Everette Johnson said at the scene.
