November death ruled a suicide

DURHAM -- A man found dead near the Eno River in November shot himself in the chest, according to the state medical examiner's office.

The body of Judge Thomas Johnson, 40, was found in a thicket near the Guess Road bridge on the morning of Nov. 3. He was last seen by his family the night before.

Johnson shot himself with a shotgun, according to a medical examiner report.

The box for the shotgun, purchased the day before, and the weapon were found next to his body, the report said. No traces of drugs or alcohol were found in his blood.
