RALEIGH - NCAA president Myles Brand is scheduled to speak tonight at N.C. State University about the tensions between athletics and academics on college campuses.

As part of N.C. State's Millennium Seminar Series, Brand is expected to discuss the National Collegiate Athletic Association's efforts to balance the two interests.

The former president of Indiana University, Brand took over as president of the NCAA in 2002. Brand has been a critic of the athletics "arms race" among universities who have ramped up funding of major intercollegiate sports and has exhorted schools to reform policies and procedures to encourage academic achievement by student-athletes.

The speech is free and open to the public and is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the university's Stewart Theatre.
