Weekend reunion set for Central High

HILLSBOROUGH - The community is invited to a reunion and celebration of Central High School, a former Orange County school for black children in grades one through 12. The school graduated its first class in 1938 and its last class in 1968. The campus at 402 N. Nash St. now houses Hillsborough Elementary School. Here is the schedule:

6:15 p.m. Friday at Hillsborough Elementary School -- alumni basketball game, with alumni marching band and cheerleaders. Women's game begins at 7 p.m. Men's game begins at 8 p.m. Pre-game festivities begin at 6:15 p.m.

10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Hillsborough -- parade featuring Central High School alumni and current Hillsborough and Central elementary pupils and others in the community.

Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hillsborough Elementary School -- Maypole wrapping, music, alumni softball game, storytelling and food and crafts vendors.

8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Hillsborough Elementary School semiformal prom with live band. Dances will include the bump, mashed potato and cha-cha. Cost is $25 a person.

3 p.m. Sunday worship service at Mount Bright Missionary Baptist Church, 211 W. Union St.

Shuttle transportation for the parade and afternoon festivities will be provided about every 15 minutes starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Stops will be the parking lot of the former Wal-Mart on Churton Street; the corner of Churton and King streets; and the Maxway parking lot on Churton Street near U.S. 70.Women, including community residents, still are being recruited for the women's basketball teams.
