INSTRUMENT IN PASADENA: Bell set. Played with mallets, it's like a miniature xylophone. Not many bands use them anymore in marching. Broughton borrowed its four sets for the parade from Leesville Road High School and Clinton High School.
KEVIN ALSO PLAYS: xylophone, marimba, cow bells, claves, kabasa, cymbals, shakers and other instruments usually set up in field shows in a front stationary ensemble, known as the pit. He has also played the piano since he was 4.
Trombonist Catherine Ernst, a Broughton junior, writes about the band's trip to Pasadena, Calif., online at share.triangle.com/broughtonband.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE MARCHING WITH THE BELL SET: "Going from a stationary instrument to a moving instrument. You have to keep in line, in step, and play the right music -- making sure you're not crashing into the person beside you."
