RALEIGH -- The Wake County school board agreed today to name a new middle school after the town of Rolesville.

"Rolesville Middle School" will now be the name of the school which will be built near the intersection of Burlington Mills Road and US 401. Rolesville town leaders had asked for that name, citing how they helped secure the land for the school district.

Rolesville came to the school district's rescue this year after county commissioners initially rejected a proposed land purchase for the school. Commissioners credit town leaders with helping negotiate more favorable terms with the seller and contributing $112,500 toward the deal.

The commissioners approved the deal in April. The school is scheduled to open in 2011, a year later than planned because of the delay getting the site.

School board member Horace Tart complained today that it could taxpayers an additional $700,000 because commissioners hadn't signed off on the property in the beginning.

School board members also stressed today that just because it's named Rolesville doesn't mean that the schoolwon't have students from Raleigh and Wake Forest.

Board members said they may at a later date rename Wake Forest-Rolesville Middle School to avoid any confusion between the two schools.
