Eight out of 10 days of perfect weather could translate into record-breaking attendance at the State Fair. Temperatures hovered in the 70s or low 80s throughout the week, and the sun shone brightly every day but Thursday and Friday. Even then, nobody could complain, because rain is so badly needed across North Carolina.

The highlight of the week was Saturday's record for single-day attendance: 145,955. It bested last year's record of 145,461 set on the corresponding day of the fair last year.

Through nine days, attendance at the 2007 State Fair totaled 760,178. That had fair officials speculating that if Sunday's attendance reached 86,547 or higher, the fair would set a record for total gate receipts. The record to break is 846,724, set in 2000.

The gates closed on the 10-day event at midnight Sunday. The final numbers are to be calculated today.
