Hybrid vehicles combine an electric motor and a gasoline engine to run more efficiently than gas-only vehicles. But they cost more. At about $21,500, a Honda Civic Hybrid is about 25 percent more expensive than a comparable gas-only model.

The federal government helps by offering a $2,000 tax deduction on hybrids sold before Dec. 31. The new energy bill provides a new tax deduction starting next year that will vary depending on the model.

Then there's gas savings. According to AAA Carolinas, someone who drives 15,000 miles a year and trades a large SUV for a subcompact hybrid would save about $3,000 on fuel in 3≥ years.

Many hybrid buyers are willing to pay more to help the environment by reducing pollution and using less gas. Bob and Bobbie Armstrong of Apex thought they were splurging for a basic Toyota Prius at over $23,000 but decided it was worth the sacrifice for the environment.

"I know we're going to make up for a lot of it with gas," said Bobbie Armstrong, 66, a deacon at Holy Family Episcopal Church in Chapel Hill. "But it wasn't just a practical thing."
