Kevin Littlejohn, 23, gets 20 miles per gallon in his car. He studies insects and works at a hookah bar.

What he drives: A 1995 Volvo station wagon with a front fender that occasionally needs reattaching and a back seat that often has a large bag of pine shavings (for his pet guinea pigs). Bought the car on Craigslist.

Pet peeve: "On the way to Raleigh, I have to go through UNC campus on South Road, which is the quickest route. However, during class changes I absolutely hate driving down it. Most people don't even look when they walk and a third of them jaywalk outside of the many many crosswalks."

Why he hasn't bought a hybrid: "I am 6'7'', 260+ lbs, so I cannot fit into the gas-efficient Hondas or Toyotas, trust me I have tried."
