Travel diary: Chris Allen

Allen, 25, Is An RTP Programmer and a Cary Resident.

Why he chose a 2008 Honda Civic: He wanted good gas mileage (his manual-transmission Civic gets up to 37 mpg) and a car that would last for more than 200,000 miles. "My last car didn't make it that far," he said.

How he drives: "Every day, I contribute to that massive traffic jam on I-40. ... The primary reason I work early hours is because I don't like sitting in traffic. ... I normally listen to whichever radio station has the best traffic reports. "

His favorite radio traffic reporter: "Brian LeBlanc, but Curtis Media keeps moving him around between all their different stations (96 Rock, Y102.9, 620 AM), so sometimes I have trouble finding him. ... One thing that's nice about 620, however, is that they always have a traffic report between 6:55 and 7 a.m., which is usually during my commute."

What makes a good radio traffic reporter: "I'd say one who has knowledge of the roads, speaks clearly and gives concise traffic reports without jazzing it up too much. Traffic reporters who try to make everything dramatic, for example, 'I-40 is BUMPER TO BUMPER!!! WATCH OUT!!' are the worst."
