CLINTON -- Westbound traffic on Interstate 40 in Sampson County is being detoured up and over an exit ramp after a bridge was closed for repairs.

A vehicle hit the underside of the N.C. 403 bridge at mile marker 355 near Faison last week, a state Transportation Department spokesman said.

N.C. 403 is closed in both directions. Eastbound I-40 is open.

The westbound lanes are expected to be closed until June 26 for emergency repairs, and more work will likely be needed later this summer, the transportation department said.
