RALEIGH - A possible tire blowout caused the fatal accident this morning on Interstate 40 when a log truck overturned, according to witnesses that were interviewed for a police report.

The crash, between South Saunders Street and Lake Wheeler Road, killed the truck's driver, listed as Eric Gene Simmons, 54, of 1609 Dogwood Acres Drive in Sanford. He was killed when his log truck crossed several lanes of traffic, struck a guard rail, then overturned down an embankment before hitting a tree, pinning him in the cab, according to reports.

Logs were dislodged from the truck and one struck a parked 18-wheeler truck, forcing the driver to take shelter between the truck's cab and trailer. He was reportedly unharmed.

The accident, which was reported at 10:38 a.m., tied up traffic most of the day. The report lists the owner of the log truck as Sanford-based Elliott Logging, Inc.
