SMITHFIELD - One person was killed and another injured late Thursday when a vehicle overturned and struck a utility pole, police said.

The accident, which occurred at 9:27 p.m. on N.C. 210 at Cleveland Road, cut off power to more than 1,800 homes and businesses. Progress Energy crews were working to restore power at midnight.

A portion of N.C. 210 west of U.S. 70 was closed after the wreck.

One occupant was ejected from the vehicle and died. The other was airlifted to Duke Hospital in undisclosed condition, said Smithfield police Lt. J. Grady.

Police withheld the names of the crash victims.
