CLAYTON - Two men were arrested after Clayton police officials say they stole about $1,500 worth of metal from The Church at Clayton Crossing.

Brian Antonio Everett, 31, of 200 Hunter Way in Clayton, and Edwin Darryl Matthews, 52, of 511 Oak St. in Smithfield, were charged with one count each of felonious larceny.

According to a news release, Clayton police officials were called to the church, at 11407 U.S. 70 Business West, to investigate a theft. A large amount of copper, aluminum, stainless steel and radiators were missing from the back of the church, officials told the police. The items were being dismantled for recycling by the church, the release stated.

One of the men was arrested at a recycling center in Johnston County while trying to sell the materials.

Both men are being held in the Johnston County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
