Leak prompts evacuation of homes

CLAYTON - Sludge that smelled like gas leaking from an aboveground tank prompted the evacuation of 12 homes midday Saturday.

Firefighters received a call reporting gas fumes at 403 S. Durham St. about 11:30 a.m., said Clayton fire chief Lee Barbee. Recent heavy rain caused the sludge to flow from the abandoned gas station onto the street.

Firefighters and county emergency management officials remained at the scene through the afternoon as cleanup took place. No injuries were reported.

By late Saturday afternoon, the residents were allowed to return home.
