Winner declared in county board race

SMITHFIELD - After counting provisional ballots Tuesday, Johnston County election officials determined that Glenn McLamb of Benson was the winner of a tight Democratic primary in the District 4 county commissioner race. McLamb got 8,108 votes to Donald J. Byrd's 7,866 votes.

That 242-vote difference was slightly less than the 255-vote lead McLamb held over Byrd, a resident of Angier, as of election night, when McLamb's preliminary total was 7,953 votes.

But it was enough to ensure that McLamb will face Republican incumbent DeVan Barbour in the fall general election. McLamb previously ran for the seat against Barbour in 2004.
