Minor quake felt in Boone-Blowing Rock area

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed Monday what some Watauga County residents were talking about Sunday evening – an earthquake in the Boone area.

The USGS said a minor earthquake, with an estimated intensity of 2.4, was reported about 7:30 p.m. in the Boone-Blowing Rock area. The quake was centered about two-thirds of a mile east of Tweetsie Railroad, or about 5 miles southeast of Boone.

There were numerous reports on social media Sunday evening about people in the Watauga County area hearing a “boom” or feeling the ground shake. Staff reports
